Luna Moth Different Types of Butterflies

Moon Moth or Luna Moth

Moon Moth or Luna Moth

When I went out for my walk this morning I came across this moon moth and I thought of you. I haven't seen one around here in quite a while. The Luna moth is native to North America.

These moths produce two generations a year depending on the climate. In northern climates like Canada they produce only once a year and appear around June or July.

In southern reagions they will produce two a year and the first one will be around April or May.

They can be found as far south as Mexico. And their life cycle is only 7 days.

Hope you enjoy!

by: Aundra Bell

I have 3 of these Amazing Moths on my back patio....So beautiful & Sad their life cycle is only 7 days. I posted your site on them for my wall on Facebook. Your photo of them is truly beautiful! I live in Yantis, Tx. 75497 so you'll know where I spotted mine. Today is April 4th the first day I saw them they were breeding on my back concrete steps and I noticed them while mowing...I left them unharmed. Checked on them today is when I saw 3 of them instead of two. ♥♥♥♥

I live in Tennessee and my boys were out playing and came across a beautiful butterfly that they could not identify. So I looked it up. They still can't believe that it only lives for seven days. I had to share because I have only seen maybe three in my whole life(27yrs).

Luna Moth in South Jersey
by: Sally

Hi Pat; I just did a check on Wikki and I realized I have some conflicting information going on. I'll have to do a little more research.

But here is what that article says:

In the northeastern United States around New Jersey or New York, the moths produce two generations each year. The first of these appear in April and May, and the second group can be seen approximately nine to eleven weeks later.

The moth you saw would be from this second group which would be about now.

My sister took this Luna Moth picture and she told me she hadn't seen one in years. I have never seen one except for this picture.

Thanks for your question;

Sally

I just found this butterfly in my mud room. I live in South Jersey. Are they common for this area. Never saw anything like it. It was the markings on the wings that was so unusual and the pretty green, size just everything about it.
